FC Breitenbach engagement, 25 May 2022

Cleaning up the forest so new plants can thrive and small animals have a place to take cover

We are pleased to present another engagement supported by EGK-Gesundheitskasse:

FC Breitenbach mission, working together out in nature

Together with their trainer, Patrick Marzetti, the boys from FC Breitenbach’s E-red team helped forest ranger Thomas Suter and forestry worker Martin to clean up the forest.

The aim was to pile up the wood left over after logging in large stacks to create a new, protected habitat for the following small creatures:

  • Mice
  • Lizards
  • Birds
  • Insects etc.

This will also give larger forest animals more space and allow new small trees and plants to grow better. Tree protection will be installed after around eight months to prevent wild animals from eating certain saplings. This will help the forest to grow naturally.

Training camp
Patrick Marzetti’s team spent a whole week of camp in April 2022 in Sumiswald playing football in the mornings and taking part in lots of activities in the afternoons. Besides going to a climbing centre, they even made their own cheese, which will be ready for them to pick up in August.

Rewarded for their efforts
To reward the E-red boys’ team for their efforts, EGK donated a lump sum to the camp. To help us through our day in the forest, the Forestry Office provided us with sandwiches and drinks.

We all learnt a lot about the forest and came to realise how strenuous it is to be a forest warden.

The stacks of branches in the forest serve several purposes:

  • They create a protected habitat for small animals who live in the forest.
  • The piles of wood make space for new trees and plants.
  • Climate change is also leading to more forest fires in our area. The stacks help to prevent widespread fire.
