Are you planning to emigrate and are you already, or will you in the future be, in receipt of a pension in Switzerland? Find out here what you need to know.

You are moving to an EU/EFTA country*

  • You are required to have basic insurance in Switzerland if you draw your pension exclusively from Switzerland.
  • If you draw your pension from your country of emigration, take out health insurance there.

*You have the right to choose in the following countries.
This means you decide where you want to take out insurance. To do this you must draw your pension from Switzerland.
If you do not wish to take out insurance in Switzerland, you must submit an application for exemption from the requirement to take out insurance (to the form).  

  • Germany
  • France
  • Italy
  • Austria
  • Portugal
  • Spain

New place of residence outside the EU/EFTA

You are no longer required to take out insurance in Switzerland. Take out insurance in your new country of residence or take out international insurance.

If you wish to exercise the right to choose, please use this form to apply for exemption from compulsory insurance.

Emigrants with a low income who are still insured in Switzerland can apply for a premium reduction from the HIA Collective Institution in Olten. Click on the button for further information on the countries.

Information on premium reduction

Your health insurer tells you where you can be treated.

  • If you have taken out insurance in your new country of residence, you are also eligible for treatment there.
  • If you remain insured in Switzerland, you can choose whether to receive treatment at your new place of residence or in Switzerland.

FAQ

For Germany, you have the right to choose. If you draw your pension exclusively from Switzerland, you can choose whether you would like to remain insured in Switzerland or to take out new cover in Germany.
Please note: If you opt for Germany, you must submit an application for exemption from compulsory insurance (to the form).

Retiring abroad
